Genitive versus Non-Genitive Subjects in –ing Clauses
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This paper adresses the issue of non-finite -ing clauses used in the post-verbal position or after a preposition whose subject is expressed by the possessive form of a personal pronoun, or the genitive form of a noun, or by the object form of a personal pronoun, or the non-genitive form of a noun. The -ing verb forms in these clauses are commonly categorised as gerunds. Based on the data collected from the Brown/Frown and LOB/F-LOB tagged corpora, the paper considers a diachronic change in the frequency of occurrence of these constructions. Since the corpora chosen contain texts from academic papers, newspapers and works of fiction, they illustrate the usage in the main registers of written English. The paper also comments on possible syntactic and semantic differences between the examples with genitive versus non-genitive subjects as well as on some limitations in their use.
