A Healthy Sibling of an Individual with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder in Social Work

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The aim of the text is to present the results of research on the position and role of a healthy sibling of an individual with ASD in the family in relation to social work. The ultimate goal is to describe a healthy sibling of an individual with ASD as a subject of empowerment in social work. Theoretically, the text is based on the knowledge of special pedagogy in relation to the characteristics of the autistic spectrum disorder, as well as on the theories and methods of social work stemming from the systemic and postmodern perspective, in which relationships and communication in systems and empowerment in relation to the community play a dominant role. The basic method of data collection for the presented research was a narrative interview. The respondents' testimonies were deconstructed and reconstructed in relation to the individual stages of a life of a healthy sibling in a family with ASD. It has been found that a healthy sibling of an individual with ASD is at all stages of life an important subject of empowerment, based on help, support and care in the family, provided that he/she receives adequate help and support from a professional or someone with a similar experience. The research shows concrete possibilities - topics of cooperation between Special Education Needs Services, school system and social work in relation to families with ASD. Research addresses the multidisciplinary nature of working with families with ASD. The theme of involving peers in supporting families with ASD is also discussed.
