Overtourism in the czech sandstone rocks: Causes of the problem, the current situation and possible solutions

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Sandstone rocks are a popular destination for trips in the Czech Republic. However, over the past 20 years, the number of tourists visiting the best-known and most beautiful locations has multiplied, leading to their deterioration and reduced comfort for both tourists and locals. Queues on hiking trails, a lot of garbage, excrements, signs of vandalism and omnipresent noise are now part of the visits to these idyllic natural sceneries. Impacts on fauna, flora and rocks themselves are often devastating, although they are nature reserves with the highest degree of protection. The paper presents the three most visited sandstone rocks destinations in the Czech Republic: Bohemian Switzerland, Bohemian Paradi se and Adršpach Rocks, describes the current situation with the attendance of these localities and the structure of visitors. Subsequently, the results of a public opinion survey conducted in 2019 between visitors of these three areas and locals are discussed. The results show that the local people‘s opinion of tourists is very critical; most residents would like to reduce their numbers as their presence negatively affects the daily life of their residence. Some residents even try to be away from home in the main tourist season to escape this rush. Tourists are also aware of the many negatives that overtourism brings: some would like to regulate the number of visitors, while others see the cause in a poor destination and visitor management. The priorities of tourists and locals are then compared with the current management programme of these sites and the greatest drawbacks are highlighted. The results show that although many regional actors are aware of the negative effects of overtourism, they have no useful strategy to deal with these problems except for nature conservation authorities. Although the negative effects are most perceived by local residents, municipal representatives are usually helpless. The conclusion outlines possible strategies for reducing the negative effects of overtourism on these nature reserves.
