Turkish for Advanced: Domestic and Ethnically Motivated Violence in Turkish-German Cinema

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This paper analyzes domestic and ethnically motivated violence in migrant cinema and films inspired by this filmic tradition, which we will name as migrant-themed cinema. We investigate to what extent the recent ramifications of commercialization dominate popular Turkish-German films, from a period of 20 years, between 1998 and 2017. This process can be understood as a somewhat controversial case of transcultural diffusion or cultural exchange (Jackson 2021, 81–83, 87) and, for some viewers, perhaps even becomes similar to the cinematic „commodification of Otherness.” This is a popular and common phenomenon „because it is offered as a new delight, more intense, more satisfying than normal ways of doing and feeling. Within commodity culture, ethnicity becomes spice, seasoning that can liven up the dull dish that is mainstream white culture” (Hooks 2006, 366). Yet, by focusing on the portrayal of aggression, we conclude that acculturation (Berry 2006, 27–29; Sam 2006, 17), especially when this term is located in the theoretical framework of postcolonialism (Bhatia and Ram 2001, 2–3), is the notion that characterizes these films better. The article discusses Turkish-German films.
