The present paper discusses the possibilities of arelationship between academy, NGOs and practicein Research by Design on the case study of the firstauthor’s PhD research in performative wood andchairing of NGO Collaborative Collective, o.s. (http://www.collaborativecollective.cc/) The more commonlink to commercial practice in this case might notreach the goal due to the long lasting sampling andprototyping compare to the timeframe of commercialprojects. On the other side, academy is often notas flexible as small NGOs in its organisation andgoals. While, in this case, the academic research isfocused on responsive wood material, design andenvironmental science, the NGO can link this withsociety, culture, education and popularisation ofscience. By doing so, the project is reaching highercomplexity, connecting art, science and public life.Within this project, two Environmental SummerPavilions, pareSITE (http://archinect.com/mobius) andLOOP (http://environmentalpavilion.tumblr.com/),have been built in the city centre of Prague and hostedmulti-genres festivals, reSITE (http://resite.cz/en/) andEnviroCity (https://www.facebook.com/envirocity/), related to public space during summer 2013 and2014, respectively. The pavilions themselves relate tohot and dry summer city environments by absorbingmoisture at night, when the relative humidity is highand evaporating it during arid summer noon of thePrague city centre, thus pleasing the stay of festivals’visitors.
