Der Aufsatz gibt eine Einführung in das literarische Werk des Arztes und Schriftstellers Philipp Keller (1891-1973) vor allem anhand der Frauenfiguren in seinen beiden längeren Erzählungen Gemischte Gefühle (1913) und Ärmliche Verhältnisse (aus dem Nachlass, 1994) sowie anhand bisher ungedruckter Aufzeichnungen. Insbesondere Gemischte Gefühle erscheint als ein Beispiel für die Dekadenzliteratur um und nach 1900, die sich mit vitalistischen Positionen sowie der Bürger-Künstler-Problematik auseinandersetzt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird Gemischte Gefühle unter einigen motivischen Aspekten mit Tonio Kröger (1903) von Thomas Mann verglichen, was auch einige Figurennamen nahelegen. Keller überträgt die Bürger-Künstler- und Bohème-Problematik gleichsam ins Kleinbürgerliche. Die beiden längeren Erzählungen Kellers verarbeiten die ungewollte Initiation einer jungen Frau ins Geschlechtsleben einmal aus weiblicher, dann aus männlicher Erzählperspektive. Es erweist sich, dass insbesondere die Figur Bertheline aus Gemischte Gefühle literarisch moderner und emanzipierter erscheint, als es die teils am literarischen Realismus, teils an einer objektivierenden Philosophie orientierten Reflexionen Kellers über seine Texte nahelegen.

The essay offers an introduction into some literary works by the dermatologist and author Philipp Keller (1891-1973). Particular attention is given to women in his two longer stories Gemischte Gefühle (Mixed Sentiments) (1913) and Ärmliche Verhältnisse (Poor Conditions, postum 1994)) and some so-far inedited manuscripts. Especially Gemischte Gefühle appears as an example of the literature of decadence from about 1900, which deals with positions from the philosophy of vitalism (‘Lebensphilosophie’) and the conflicts and discrepancies between artists and bourgeois people. Against this background, some aspects from Gemischte Gefühle, e.g. literary motives, are being compared to Tonio Kröger (1903) by Thomas Mann. Some names of Keller’s personae clearly suggest that comparison. Keller apparently translates the issues of artists, bohème life, and the bourgeois people into the world of petite bourgeoisie. His two longer stories explore the introduction of a young woman into sexual life against her will first from a female, later from a male point of view. It becomes clear that in particular Keller’s persona Bertheline from Gemischte Gefühle appears more modern and more independent than one would judge from Keller’s reflections about his works which seem to be influenced partly by literary realism, partly by a philosophical world view still tainted by objectivism and metaphysics.
