The Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) presents the operational policy within external relations of the EU. It has not only military and defence elements, but consists also of civilian activities. Through the security and defence integration the EU presents an important actor in international political and security relations. For EU member states, especially small states such as the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic, the CSDP presents an opportunity to increase their own national security aswell as to increase their military and civilian capacities in order to play a role in international crisis management. From this perspective the paper deals with the realisation of the Slovak and the Czech security policy within the CSDP since the EU enlargement in 2004. The paper focuses mainly on the development of European dimension of security and defence policy of both countries, contributions of both states to the CSDP and on main challenges and opportunities for cooperation withi
