The article deals with some problems of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Czech Republic in comparison with Poland. Attention is focused on the barriers for the development of small and medium enterprises in both countries. The first part focuses on the importance of SMEs to both economies. The following is a list and description of selected aspects of quality of business environment with emphasis on the financial barrier to the development of small and medium enterprises. In the last part of the paper contains proposals on the possibility of removing the identified barriers.
