In 1997-1999 the occurrence of viruses belonging to the genus Potyvirus was studied in the Czech Republic. In these years a total number of 304 samples of maize plants with different symptoms of virus infection were collected at 9 localities. According to the response to the differentiation sorghum cultivat "Atlas" and ELISA tests, 224 isolates were identified as SCMV and three as MDMV. Two MDMV and 7 SCMV isolates were tested for pathogenicity to 10 maize lines of different origins.
