The chapter draws attention to the fact that the understanding of the Afghan conflict through the prism of ideology of Islamism that has practical implications for the design of the Western policies in the country contributes to the conservation of the situation. The chapter urges the scholars to shift attention from descriptive analysis of the existing Western policies to contextualizing our own role in the conflict and argues that only by such reframing (rather than renaming the War on Terror) the West could break the vicious cycle of the current conflict.
