The rise of digital marketplaces has been posing new challenges to product safety and consumer protection. In 2023, the European Commission requested information from Amazon on how it protects consumers from illegal products in compliance with the EU’s DSA, which aims to create a safer digital space for all consumers; the same request was also sent to other digital marketplaces, most recently to Temu. Furthermore, the announced EU Customs Reform proposal aims to make OPs, including digital marketplaces, key actors in ensuring that goods sold online in the European market comply with all customs obligations, including all non-financial measures. This Chapter explores the obligations and responsibilities of digital marketplaces with regard to protection of the environment and public health. The Chapter overviews the existing legal framework, focusing particularly on the EU, zooming in on the DSA especially.
