Validity and reliability of the Czech adaptation of the Sport Motivation Scale-6
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985; Ryan & Deci, 2000) offers a comprehensive framework for understanding motivation in sport by distinguishing between autonomous and controlled forms of behavioral regulation. Within this framework, the Sport Motivation Scale-6 (SMS-6; Mallett et al., 2007) represents one of the most widely used instruments for assessing athletes’ motivation, yet it has not been psychometrically validated in the Czech context. The present study aimed to examine the factorial validity, reliability, and measurement invariance of a Czech adaptation of the SMS-6 among performance-level athletes and to provide evidence of its construct validity within the SDT framework. Data were collected from 303 athletes (134 men, 169 women) aged 18–30 years (M = 22.38, SD = 4.09) representing a various sport disciplines, predominantly individual sports (72.6%). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to test the theorized six-factor structure encompassing intrinsic motivation, integrated regulation, identified regulation, introjected regulation, external regulation, and amotivation. Model fit was evaluated using standard fit indices, and internal consistency was assessed through Cronbach’s α and McDonald’s ω. Measurement invariance across gender and sport type (individual vs. team) was examined using a series of multi-group CFAs. CFA supported the six-factor model after excluding one low-loading item from Identified Regulation (IDT_3; λ = .23). The final model demonstrated acceptable fit to the data, χ²(215) = 335, p < .001, RMSEA = .043, SRMR = .051, CFI = .924, and TLI = .911. Factor loadings were moderate to high, and inter-factor correlations followed the simplex pattern predicted by SDT, with autonomous forms of motivation positively interrelated and amotivation negatively associated with all self-determined forms. Internal consistency coefficients were satisfactory for most subscales (α = .63–.84; ω = .65–.85). Measurement invariance was supported across gender and sport type, indicating that the scale functions equivalently across these groups. Overall, the Czech adaptation of the SMS-6 demonstrated good factorial validity, acceptable reliability, and satisfactory cross-group equivalence, offering a reliable measure of multidimensional motivation in sport that supports both research and applied practice.
