This paper describes new tools and methods used for shortening the planning process and lowering costs for the preparation of production. using these tools and developing new method are now one of the main research topics in the Department of Industrialengineering and Management of the University of West bohemia. The concept of the digital factory is defined. The research areas are further outlined - planning and layout of the production and using digital factory for training of students and managers.The last section presents one powerful software tool to solve the tasks of the Digital factory - DELMIA.
