Expanding the use of UHSS and AHSS (Ultra High Strength Steels and Advanced High Strength Steels) requires changes in engineers' approach to the design and development of manufacturing processes. In addition, the engineering design of structural parts will have to adapt to the capabilities of the manufacturing processes. Thanks to the excellent mechanical properties attainable by advanced thermomechanical processing, the utilization of the amount of material needed for securing the required service characteristics of structural elements will improve substantially. By this means, marked savings can be achieved. These savings will involve not only the material but also, provided that suitable routes are employed, the manufacturing costs as well. An appropriately planned processing chain can deliver considerable energy savings and even shorter manufacturing times.
