Patočka's Reflections on Literature and Meaning

Jan Patočka's conception of literature as an expression of meaning is inspired both by Husserl's conception of the "Lebenswelt" and Heidegger's notion of the openness of being in an artwork. Patočka approaches the problem of meaning in literature, however, from the perspective of the philosophy of history. He states that the meaning expressed by classical or medieval literature, which is established and objective, differs greatly from meaning in modern literature, which is individual and subjective. Patočka also suggests, however, that modern literature discloses the fundamentally problematic nature of meaning; he argues that modern literature reflects the crisis of meaning, which is a driving force of history. In conclusion, his essay emphasizes thatthe development of modern literature should be conceived of as the realization of problematic meaning, the realization of "meaning as a journey".
