The chapter The Disappearance of Identity in Franz Kafka's Prose Metamorphosis attempts to weaken the hypertrophied autobiographical aspect of the interpretation of Kafka's prose in favour of a view of this ambiguous text that takes into consideration more general symbolic meanings, such as the growing coldness of interpersonal relationships, dehumanization of everyday stereotypes and the perception of otherness as unacceptable anomaly. This interpretation is presented with the knowledge that Kafka' provocative dialogue with the reader ironically allows for other meanings as well.
