Shakespeare's Poetry in the context of mimesis and imitatio in Elizabethan Poetics

The study deals with the fundamental topics of Elizabethan poetics, namely the Elizabethan considerations of the classical mimetic concept (particularly Aristotle and Horace). Shakespeare's poetics will be clarified on the basis of the chosen aspects ofhis poetry (namely with the help of his Sonnets, Venus and Adonis, Lucrece and The Phoenix and the Turtle) and in comparison with Elizabethan discussions about poetics (especially Philip Sidney and Edmund Spenser). Unlike Sidney or Spenser, Shakespeare did not compose any theoretic work dealing with poetics; nevertheless one can explore his consideration of it with the help of his poetry. First of all it is obvious he does not surrender to classical aesthetic rules. On the other hand, Elizabethan poetics is not overly rigid and resists slavish imitations of classical examples.
