The Security Question in the post-Mubarak Egypt: The Security Void in Sinai
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The article addresses implications of the security void in the Sinai Peninsula, which has emerged in the aftermath of the Egyptian uprising in 2011. It focuses on the growth of violent attacks against security personnel in the northern part of Sinai andcross-border attacks aimed at the Israeli targets. The author analyzes the role of two groups: the local Bedouin population and the Jihadist militant groups. By comparing three periods - before the 2011 uprising; between 2011 uprising and 2013 PresidentMursi's disposal; and the period after Mursi's disposal on July 3, 2013 - the article maps changes in pattern of violent conduct. It documents a significant rise of violence and intensification of Jihadist activities in the region after the uprising 2011. The disposal of President Mursi triggered a further intensification of violence in the region, as well as, novel patterns of violence such as the use of sophisticated weaponry and methods of combat (e.g. suicide attacks).
