The contribution is primarily focused on the evolution of the wording of the referendum question (RQ) on independence in a clearly delineated period (1980-2014) in which referendums on independence (RIs) became a frequent process accompanied secessionist process throughout the continents. For having sufficient amount of relevant samples, investigation and subsequent evaluation and comparision of the RQs are divided into four secessionist groups-emerging democracies; mutually negotiated and internationally supervised binding referendums proceeded mostly in post-colonial world; seceding micro-states in Pacific and Caribbean; and liberal democratic realm in the West.
