Archaeology and the history of forests - Approaches to the study of archaeological monuments in woodland environments and the conceptual design for their heritage protection
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Forested areas in the Czech Republic still retain a multilayered memory of the past in the form of deserted landscapes and can be understood as spaces with uniquely preserved archaeological monuments, where one can find not only single isolated sites, but also whole sections of deserted cultural landscapes from the prehistoric, medieval and modern periods. The Czech Republic is one of the twelwe most heavily forested areas of Europe; forest areas cover a total of 33.7% of the total area of the country. Current trends in European Union forest policy adapted by the Czech Republic aim towards the principles of sustainable forestry. Unfortunately, the concept for the protection of archaeological and cultural sites in forests in not mentioned anywhere in existing Czech forestry laws. Archaeological monuments in woodland areas are covered by still valid but outdated Section 22 of Act No. 20/1987 Coll., the State Conservation Act. Currently, the greatest threat to monuments is modern forest management, which increasingly uses heavily forestry machinery. The article provides the main steps required for effective strategies of monument care and for sustainable forest management of archaeological heritage sites located in woodland areas (e. g. evaluation of historical and cultural value, precise documentation, risk management, communication and cooperation with forest managers, active role in regional forest development planning, education of society).
