The Self-Presentation of Burghers in Moravian Seigniorial Towns
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Thechapter examines burghers’ self-representation via visual media in specific liege town milieu at the dominion of the lords of Hradec in the second half of the 16th century. Many artworks connected with burghers‘ patronage (e.g. murals, decorated façades, architectural elements and tombs) hold various coats of arms including burghers’ arms, guild arms and the dominion owner’s coat of arms. The analysis of a few examples of heraldic bearings and artworks from Telč and Slavonice shows that burghers’ self-presentation is often closely linked to the representation of guilds. The presence of aristocratic coats of arms in public space (on façades and in interiors of houses as well) is explained as the expression of identity and loyalty to the owner of the town.
