In der Diskussion um Richard Wagners Antisemitismus ist immer wieder behauptet worden, der Komponist habe unter die Handlungsträger seiner Opern ,Judenkarikaturen‘ eingereiht und diese auch mit einer ,jüdischen Sprechweise‘ (Mauscheldeutsch) ausgestattet. Unter Anwendung variationslinguistischer Methoden überprüft der Aufsatz diese in der Forschung tradierte These, indem er die Sprache zweier ,verdächtigerʻ Gestalten des Ring-Zyklus, die Nibelungen Alberich und Mime, auf Strukturen des Jiddischen (Phonetik, Semantik, Syntax) hin untersucht und dabei mit der Sprache anderer Ring-Gestalten vergleicht.

In the discussion of Richard Wagner’s anti-Semitism, it has been repeatedly claimed that the composer included ʻJewish caricatures’ among the characters in his operas and also endowed them with a ʻJewish way of speaking’ (Mauscheldeutsch). Using variation-linguistic methods, the article examines this thesis, which has been handed down in research, by examining the language of two ʻsuspicious’ characters in the Ring cycle, the Nibelungs Alberich and Mime, for structures of Yiddish (phonetics, semantics, syntax) and comparing them with the language of other Ring characters.
