The Middle East in the Long-Term State of Instability – Main Causes and Features of Its Unstable and Conflict-Prone Regional Order

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

High level of instability and conflict potential of the Middle East is well-known and the discipline of IR can explain many of its causes – be they found on individual, state or systemic level of analysis. Especially the systemic-level (structural) explanation of the nature of its regional order offers us a plausible understanding of regional security, political and economic dynamics and complex processes that shape contemporary Middle East politics and the character of intra-regional relations. In my paper, I explain how the distribution of power, activities and relations of regional and external powers in the Middle East impact its stability and conflict potential. Although we often talk about power vacuum (i.e. lack of regional management) in the region, it is still “crowded” by powers whose relations are characterized by competing interests and rivalry leading to proxy wars, armaments, unstable balance of power, weakening of regional intitutions and limiting their role in conflict prevention and resolution. As a result, regionʼs overall autonomy is low which creates opportunities for external powers to interfere into regional politics in order to fulfil their interests. These, however, do not always correspond with the general need to stabilize the regional order and reduce its conflict potential.
