Aristotle on the Stability of Anaximander’s Earth
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In his treatise De caelo, Aristotle ascribes to Anaximander of Miletus a conception which explains the stability of Earth solely by its position in the universe. Although Aristotle subsequently rejects this conception, he explains it in considerable detail. It is the only place where Aristotle deals with Anaximander’s cosmology, but while his other characterisations of Presocratic theories are usually viewed with justified criticism, most scholars accept this presentation of Anaximander’s theory as largely accurate. However, it can be argued that the abovementioned theory was in fact formulated by other thinkers, and only later ascribed to Anaximander based on certain distinctive features of his conception, which quite notably diverged from contemporary Ionian explanations.
