Be Careful, Who Your Friends Are: Anti-Semitism of the Czech “Pro-Israel” Far-right and Its Security Implications

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Some of the contemporary pro-Israel support groups should come with a health warning: “may contain traces of antisemitism and conspiracy theories”. Long gone are the times, in which the Jews had to be careful only about their enemies. In the reality of 2018, the Jewish and Israeli institutions should be increasingly aware of the real background and motives of those, who claim to be the ‘friends of Israel’. In an attempt to base the discussion about the relationship between philosemitism and antisemitism on a more practical level, my chapter explores the contrast between claims and actions of the populist right-wing parties and politicians, who publicly claim to be supporters of Israel, but in the same time, draw support from the pro-Kremlin conspiracist scene that is often openly antisemitic. I focus on the region of Central and Eastern Europe with a case study of the Czech and Slovak cases being based on primary sources. Theoretical concepts that allow the contemporary far-right to reconcile support for Israel on the one hand with antisemitism on the other are outlined together with their practical implications for Israelis and Jewish communities. The last section also discusses some of the strategic and security challenges, namely for the Diaspora Jewish communities as well as antisemitism researchers, who might find themselves trapped between the hammer of domestic antisemitism and anvil of Israeli realpolitik.
