Cuetlaxóchitl—or Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima)—is undoubtedly one of the most universal symbols of Christmas. But we know little about the meanings and uses that it had in its Mexican birthplace in pre-Hispanic times, when it adorned the gardens of Nezahualcóyotl and Moctezuma, before it donned its festive Christmas dress. Why was it associated with women? How did the flaming red color of its leaves become the emblematic symbol for Christmas?
