Ethiopia has been regarded as one of the “African lions” until the beginning of the war in Tigray (2020-2022). Its economic growth (ca. 10% annually) was among the highest on the continent. However, due to a combination of factors that include civil war(s), social inequalities, and inflation, Ethiopia’s developmental trajectories are now challenged and threatened by the abovementioned aspects as well as ethnic tensions that undermine the integrity of the state. Despite this, Ethiopia has joined BRICS as of the 1st January 2024, and is on the path of becoming a hydroelectric superpower in a broader region. This paper analyses Ethiopia’s development challenges in last two decades, addressing some of the key issues such as economic and demographic growth, urbanization, infrastructure and international cooperation. The latter is a crucial aspect of Ethiopia’s development as it still heavily relies on the USAID as well as China, being the most important investor in the country. We use interdisciplinary approach to address the socio-economic and political aspects of Ethiopia’s development which is now being seriously challenged after two decades of socioeconomic growth. The paper will be based on primary sources (data from Ethiopian ministries and other organizations), interviews in Ethiopia, and online sources. We argue that development issues are closely related to (in)stability, integrity of the state and good governance, and exactly these aspects cause lots of controversies (not only) in Ethiopia.
