Addis Ababa Masterplan and After: History and politics in the urbanization process in Ethiopia
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Addis Ababa is the only Ethiopia’s megacity with about ten million inhabitants (unofficially). As the main centre of internal (urban-rural) migration its population keeps growing and so is the territorial size of the city. In last twenty years, internal composition of the capital city has experienced an enormous change with multiple slums being demolished and thousands of condominium houses being built at the outskirts of the city. This has led, in 2014, to the announcement of the so-called Addis Ababa Masterplan which was supposed to significantly enlarge the size of the city. Subsequent ‘Oromo protests’ have shown one dimension of urbanization in Ethiopia which is related to historical and political legacies. Addis Ababa is considered by many Oromo people as the Oromo land which has been conquered by Amharic speakers in late 19th century. As a result of these historical rivalries, a new city has emerged, Sheger city, connecting together all neighbouring towns around Addis Ababa into one entity with one municipality. This paper analysis the process of urbanization in Ethiopia through the lenses of historical and ethno-political rivalries and discusses the co-existence of Addis Ababa-Sheger city in contemporary Ethiopia.
