In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden ausgewählte sprachliche Innovationen und mit ihnen zusammenhängende Sprachstrategien im österreichischen politischen Diskurs in den Jahren 2000 bis 2006 untersucht. Unter Sprachinnovationen werden Wortneubildungen, Bedeutungsveränderungen und die Herstellung neuer Verwendungskontexte verstanden, die im politischen Diskurs kreiert wurden und daher einen Beitrag zur Veränderung der Gegenwartssprache (auf dem österreichischen Staatsgebiet) leisteten ? wenn auch nur kurzfristig. Die Beispiele wurden aufgrund ihrer pragmatischen und lexikalischen Eigenschaften ausgesucht bzw. nach der Verfügbarkeit von Beispieltexten.

One sentence by the new elected Austrian Federal Chancellor, Wolfgang Schüssel, in his government declaration on the 10th of February could in a way represent a summary of both his cabinets (Schüssel I from 2000 to2002, Schüssel II from 2003 to 2006): "Idon?t want to conceal that there is a problem concerning words, diction and tone." These difficulties regarding communication are counted among the characteristics of the so-called "Wende-government". The coalition between the Austrian People?s Party and the Austrian Freedom Party had to try to convince the leading tabloid "Kronenzeitung", which reaches more than 40% of Austrian newspaper readers and published critical comments, and the critical voters, who opposed and particularly protested against their government, of their policy.
