Michel Stüeler lebte eine lange Zeit im Milieu, das vor allem lutheranisch war, das aber nach der Schlacht am Weissen Berg seine Konfession ändern und sich zum Katholizismus wenden musste. Gerade diese Problematik können wir in seinem Gedenkbuch aus den Jahren 1629-1649 beobachten, zusammen mit seinen Vorstellungen über Wunder, Geiste, Teufel und Zauber.

Michel Stüeler spent his childhood and a major part of his adulthood in a predominantly Lutheran society, which was forced to convert to Roman Catholicism after the fatal Battle of White Mountain. The tanner from the town of Krupka struggled with this transformation for the rest of his life, not always successfully - e.g. he kept his Lutheran books, but was prevented from teaching his children and from the unimpeded use of his hymn book. The essay reconstructs Stüelers beliefs and religious practices from the time of his conversion from the surviving sources, especially his notes from 1629-1649 onward. His enthusiasm for music is shown to help him to identify with the new belief in the most significant way. Stüeler was a deeply pious man believing in superstitions and miracles, evil spirits, devils and magic. His memoirs are an unique, authentic, and subjective testimony of the struggle of an individual with his own conviction and fluctuation between two denominations.
