In Wunschloses Unglück hat Peter Handke die Möglichkeiten des Darstellbaren über die Schmerzgrenze hinaus erweitert. Ausgelöst durch den Freitod der Mutter wird im Buch ihre Biographie, abgewechselt durch Gegenstrom der sprachskeptischen Reflexionen, erzählt. Somit erfüllt Handkes Erzählung die Maxime Elias Canettis, dass die Literatur den Tod bekämpfen und das Leben feiern soll – anstatt eines Epitaphs wird der Text zum Ort der Auferstehung.

In his novel Wunschloses Unglück, Peter Handke moved the limits of literature beyond the limit of pain. The impulse of this book was his mother’s suicide. Her biography is interrupted with passages full of scepticism about language and her possibility to describe what matters. In this way, the novel fulfils the Elias Canetti’s utopic these, that literature shall fight against the death and celebrate life – the text is no more an epitaph, but a place of resurrection.
