Transition Practices to Promote Active Citizenship of Youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Transition to adulthood is often defined in traditional terms of transitioning to employment, postsecondary education, and community living. Based on the experiences of youth and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in an international context, active citizenship is a concept that can provide a holistic lens through which we can plan, implement, and evaluate the transition process and outcomes in today’s society. Active citizenship focuses on security, autonomy, and influence in the lives of youth and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This chapter provides examples from three initiatives on transition, one in the United States and two in the Czech Republic, highlighting the need to broaden the focus of transition to active citizenship The authors provide recommendations for incorporating the principles of active citizenship into practice to assure that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are supported in the transition process in a holistic manner to become members of the community who have the means to participate comfortably and are able to express their opinions as much as they wish to make a desired impact on their communities.
