This chapter examines the poetry of the Irish poet Derek Mahon and explores the limits of his cosmopolitan outlook. Mahon's poems may seem forbidding to readers who do not share his frame of reference. Whereas other writers are more hospitable and do not presume their readers have enjoyed the same education they have, Mahon does not explain, does not gloss – does not, indeed, make such glosses and explanations part of his aesthetic, and perhaps this has made it difficult for Mahon’s reputation to circulate much beyond Ireland and the UK.
