Experience of Czech cities with the implementation of ecohydrological management
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In a response to the 21st century climate change, cities around the globe are implementing new ways of dealing with water in an urbanized landscape. The article presents our findings about how Czech cities implement the concept of ecohydrological management. As our survey among Czech cities and municipalities in summer 2017 (679 respondents) has shown, adaptation to climate change is not a major issue or challenge requiring immediate attention. When asked about adaptation strategies or measures a municipality or a town present in their strategic documents, the respondents very often listed measures in the area of waste management, greenery maintenance, revitalization of watercourses, and flood control and only later mentioned the issue of drinking water conservation and making use of rainfall water. The situation in researched cities also reflects the social, legislative and economic development in Czechia. Our experience tells us that the driving forces of today are active individuals in city administration, legislative and technological updates, individual city projects and current political preference for climate change adaptation measures. There is also a range of obstacles and limitations that are restrictive to the process of implementation the concept of ecohydrological management in Czech cities.
