Diferences in the staff and senior nurses'opinions of the safety of care provided in the hospitals of the Czech Repbulic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Patient safety climate has been recognized as a core determinant for improving safety in hospitals. Not only the organization management but all nurses who are in everyday contact with patients are responsible for ensuring the quality. The goal of the study to assess the differences in the opinions of staff nurses and nurses in senior positions regarding the safety of care provided in the hospitals of the Czech Republic. The quantitative survey was carried out through the use of controlled dialogues held between a questioner and a respondent. The selective sample consisted of 772 staff nurses working shifts on inpatient wards and 315 nurses in senior positions of the hospital management of the hospital or inpatient wards. Survey instruments - the Hospital Survey of Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) and evaluation of the organizational structure according to Kollárik's methodology - were used. In our survey, only one statistically significant difference was found when the differences in the evaluation of the organizational structure according to Kollárik's methodology were investigated; it was a difference in the style of team management which nurses in senior positions find bettering comparison with staff nurses. When evaluating the differences in the perception of the safety culture between nurses in senior positions and staff nurses by standardized AHRQ methodology, deeper differences in opinions were identified. Generally, nurses in senior positions have a higher opinion of their behavior than it is perceived by the staff nurses. As for the activities relating to safety, they feel that they do more than perceived by staff nurses. Development and advancement of research in the area of patient safety and strengthening of non-repressive system of accidental event reporting in the Czech Republic follows the Recommendation of the Council of EU regarding patient safety.
