The hospital survey on patient safety culture: Use of the questionnaire in European hospitals

The outline study presents the sum of current knowledge and utilizations of the standardized evaluation tool called The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture in European countries. The key words (hospital, survey, patient, safety culture) were derived from the original questionnaire title and used in various combinations for searching in PubMed, Science Direct and Bibliographica medica Čechoslovaca databases. The period between 2010 and 2017 was studied. The available papers particularly document the complications associated with linguistic and cultural adaptations of the original American tool to the use in Europe. Furthermore, they describe the results of the surveys on safety culture and the use of HSOPSC in combination with other tools, such as SSC, PMOS and others. The conclusions of the above mentioned studies particularly recommend the cultivation of the tool in the use for European countries. A higher attention should be paid to hospital management`s interest in patient safety. Repeated surveys will contribute to the improvement of the safety culture awareness and will monitor the effect of safety measures in individual hospitals. The information on the use of The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture in European countries can be regarded as the starting point for other more specified studies.
