At the beginning of the Modern Era, the word freedom included a whole complex of land and estate rights and privileges in the Czech Estates State. Those who were granted these rights and privileges did not act as individuals, but as members of corporations of the estates or as social groups. This resulted in the formation of power dualism between the king and the political nation. In consequence of the Hussite movement, this relationship also included the question of freedom of worship. Control over political institutions in the estates state was of a great importance as far as the assertion of religious and political privileges was concerned.
