This study deals with dying, death and funeral ceremonies in the world of high nobility of the Habsburg Monarchy at the period of the 19th century. The model example of reconstruction and interpretation of dying of the nobles became the Schwarzenberg family who can be perceived as a typical representative of Austrian court aristocracy. The first part of this text is based on the author?s upcoming thesis and concentrates on theoretical, methodological and heuristic approaches to the topic. The second part deals with some up to now conclusions that are supported by selected examples of cases. Interpretational description of death, dying and funeral ceremonies within the Schwarzenberg family follows chronologically particular phases of the transitional death ritual which is simultaneously introduced into the key contemporary discursuses.
