La confirmation est le deuxième des sept sacrements catholiques. Il est hélas l´un des plus négligés par les historiens, au point de faire figure de sacrement oublié. Ainsi peine-t-on á saisir comment il fut conféré au fil des siècles, comment il fut compris et reçu par des millions de fidèles de par le monde, quels sens son administration avait pour le clergé. Le livre présenté est le premier á affronter, dans toutes ses facettes, le sacrement de la confirmation. Le chapitre concret considère les sources et les possibilités pour l´examen de la confirmation en Bohème au cours de XVIIIe et XIXe siècles au point de vue de l´histoire sociale. Il se concentre sur le diocèse de České Budějovice aux deux domaines séparés : la ville même de České Budějovice et une région rurale de Pelhřimov. L´analyse se dirige vers la fréquence des visitations épiscopales, le nombre de fidèles confirmés et leurs structure selon l’âge et le gendre. La conclusion demande des recherches suivantes.

Confirmation is the second of the seven Catholic sacraments. Unfortunately, it is one of the most neglected by historians; at times it seems to be the forgotten Sacrament. Consequently, we are at a loss to understand how it was grasped and internalized by the devout throughout the world during past centuries. We do not know how the clergy felt while dispensing this sacrament. Presented book is the first to examine in all its aspects the sacrament of confirmation. The particular chapter considers the sources and research possibilities for analysing confirmation in 18th and 19th-centuries Bohemia from the point of view of social history. It concentrates on the České Budějovice diocese in two separated probes: the city of České Budějovice and the rural region around the town of Pelhřimov. The analysis focuses on the frequency of the bishops´ visits, number of confirmed believers and their structure according to age and gender. In conclusion, the questions for further researches are outlined.
