Since the beginning of the 19th century, both the urban and the rural space in the Czech lands saw a distinct increase in the proportion of illegitimate children. The research studies also repeatedly indicated a higher mortality rate in non-marital children. The aim of the paper is to find out the circumstances of the high mortality rate in non-marital children and to follow up the dynamics of its decrease. The contribution is based on the study of parish registers from a group of settlements of various size and of different legal status located in the Pelhřimov District in South Bohemia. The method of name excerption was used, which enables evaluate 5,380 entries. The infant mortality rate is analysed according to social origin of the mother of an illegitimate child, the place of the child’s birth and possible additional legitimisation of the child.
