The present study deals with the changes in the Catholic Church, especially the Holy See, from the end of the pontificate of Pope Pius X and through the first half of the pontificate of Benedict XV. It analyzes the dramatic twists and turns of World War I, the many attitudes of the major warring powers, the opinions of prominent personalities, and the political aspects of the conflict. The article examines the Catholic camp, the representatives of the Vatican curia, and diplomacy in the years 1914-1918. At the same time, it follows the position of the leading Czechoslovak politicians with respect to the Holy See, in particular, T. G. Masaryk and M. R. Stefanik, and their contacts in the struggle for the establishment of a common state of Czechs and Slovaks.
