The text attempts to outline the image of foreign diplomats through the eyes of the highest dignitaries at the court of Emperor Leopold I (Ferdinand of Dietrichstein, Johann Adolf and Ferdinand of Schwarzenberg), based on everyday life and various performances, such as ceremonial entries, audiences, banquets, and church services, as well as theater, music, and opera performances. These performances can be seen as a special kind of arena where the real or imagined expectations that the envoys built up in accordance with the power status of their rulers clashed with the recognized and accepted norms at the Viennese court.
