The castle in Český Krumlov served as the main residence of the ancient Rosenberg family since 1302. In the second half of the 16th century, Willhelm of Rosenberg had it rebuilt into a modern Renaissance residence that symbolized his position in the Kingdom of Bohemia. Český Krumlov served as a representative residence for his court when he was not staying in Prague. Johann Christian I of Eggenberg chose Český Krumlov as his residence after a falling-out with his younger brother, Johann Seyfried, in 1665, and, together with his wife, Marie Ernestina, he revived the castle and its surroundings under the influence of Baroque culture. The chapter aims to present the case of Johann Christian I's household and court in a broader context after his move to Český Krumlov. First, the author will present the historical importance of the castle as the seat of the most noble aristocrats of the Habsburg Monarchy. The study then outlines research on the Eggenberg court in the context of Czech historiography over recent decades and subsequently evaluates current knowledge of Johann Christian I of Eggenberg's household.
