Soil organic matter and humic substances - why to differentiate these terms in university education
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The terms "organic mater" and "humus" often merge in common agricultural practice, school textbooks and scientific publications. We cannot forget that humus and primary organic matter raw or rotten are two quite different things, because they have quitedifferent properties and conversion in soil. Humus is not a decomposed soil organic matter, as we have formerly and erroneously learnt. The significance of humus is above all to ensure the sorption of nutrients in soil by ion exchange and to permanentlyimprove the physical and technological properties of soil by forming organomineral associates resulting mainly into improved water and air regime of soil. Humus possesses high ion exchange capacity. The significance of primary organic matter in soil is particularly that it is the source of energy for soil microorganisms. It is responsible for the biological activity of soil that we appreciate to be an important factor for potential soil fertility. The ions change capacity of primary soil
