Contents of numerous such substances could be elicited in in vitro plant cell cultures by the addition of stressing factors, so-called elicitors, that forces the plant cells to increase it's "arsenal of warfare". More, stress that does not harm too muchcauses stimulation of grows and yield (the effect called hormesis). We have thus tried to elicit the essential oil content and yield of whole intact plants of coriander by leaf sprays containing elicitors. The yield was increased by up to 24% while the essential oil content was increased by up to 7% so that total yield of essential oil could be increased by up to 27%.
