Evaluation of stillbirth of beef calves

We evaluated the causes of stillbirth in beef calves and its relation to calving course. The most frequent causes of abnormal calving were narrow pelvis, oversized foetus and uterine inertia. The course of calving explained 29.43% (glm, binomial model with logistic regression link) of stillbirth?s variability, when more than half of stillborn came from normal calving. Other important effects were parity of dam, herd and year of calving and sex of calf. The effect of sire explained 1.90% of variability,which corresponds with the value of heritability 7.80%.
