Effect of feeding frequency on piglets’ birth weight and reproductive performance in gestating sows
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The gestation period is crucial for the growth and development of the fetus. It is essential because it directly influences the profitability and efficiency of pig farming operations. Various nutritional strategies have been explored to enhance reproductive performance in sows, but findings regarding birth weight and litter size need more consistency. The study was carried out to investigate the effect of feeding frequency on piglets’ birth weight and reproductive performance in gestating sows. The sows were fed with the same quantity of feed at two different frequencies (one group fed once per day and the second group fed twice a day). Total number of 338 sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) were divided into three parity groups (Group 1 = parity 1–2, Group 2 = parity 3–5, and Group 3 = parity ≥6). Data were obtained on piglet birth weight, number of live-born piglets, number of stillborn piglets and number of mummies. The groups were formed randomly. The feeding frequency significantly influenced the birth weight of the piglets (p < 0.05), but the number of live-birth piglets, stillborn piglets and mummies were not significantly affected. However, sows fed twice per day had higher weight of piglets at birth and the number of live-born piglets than those fed once per day. Parity significantly affected the piglet birth weight and the number of live-birth piglets but did not significantly affect the number of stillborn piglets and mummies. However, Group 2 of sows fed twice per day had the highest weight of piglets at birth (1341 g) and the number of live-born piglets (20.56), while Groups 3 and 1 fed once per day had the lowest values of 1166 g and 18.13, respectively. The highest number of stillborn piglets (1.81) was obtained from Group 2 sows fed once per day, while the lowest value of 1.15 was obtained from Group 1, fed twice per day. The results showed that increasing feeding frequency during gestation positively influenced piglets' and sows' reproductive performance.
