Los espacios literarios son en el caso de la narrativa fantástica de José María Merino un ambiente reducido y concéntrico, que puede ofrecer metamorfosis, personificaciones o alternaciones de los acontecimientos actuales y pasados y de los dos mundos, el natural y el sobrenatural. En su narrativa los espacios de casa y laberinto dominan desde el punto de vista del sujeto y su mecanismo y dinámina (lo mismo sucede p.ej. en &quot;La biblioteca de Babel&quot; de J.L.Borges). Lo principal en la obra de Merino es la imagen del espacio como lugar fascinante de la propia memoria y soñación. El escritor español como el &quot;narrador narrado&quot; borra la frontera entre la fantasía y la realidad, aprovechando hábilmente los elementos fantásticos y las situaciones oníricas como &quot;máscaras&quot; del discurso. En el mundo de la narrativa de Merino domina la lógica fantástica basada en la idea de que el elemento fantástico existe si su existencia sentimos como posible. El escritor describe la verticalidad de lo humano. Su espacio literario, el lugar descrito y construido por las palabras, se convierte en el elemento de la comprensión y percepción de su &quot;sistema&quot; literario.

In the case of José María Merino’s fantastic narrative, literary spaces become a reduced and concentric environment, which can offer metamorphoses, personifications or alternations of current and past events, and two worlds, the natural and the supernatural one. In terms of subject, mechanism and dynamics, in Merino’s narrative dominate spaces of a house and a labyrinth (the same happens e.g. in ʻThe Library of Babelʼ by J.L.Borges). The main thing in Merino’s work is the image of space as a fascinating place of one’s own memory and dreaming. The Spanish writer as the ʻnarratorʼ blurs the border between fantasy and reality, skilfully using fantastic elements and dreamlike situations as ʻmasksʼ of the discourse. Merino’s narrative world is dominated by a fantastic logic based on the idea that the fantastic element exists if its existence is felt to be possible. The writer describes the verticality of man. His literary space, the place described and constructed by words, becomes the element of understanding and perception of his literary ʻsystemʼ.
