Can We Dare to Hope?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
While Hans Urs von Balthasar offered much to theology, there remains several contentious teachings of his that are a barrier to some, even to the point of the Swiss being branded a heretic. One of these – that we should hope all will be saved – is perhaps the most controversial. Online content condemning Balthasar and this idea is easily found, and some published works – articles and books – regard this idea as against Christian teachings. After offering a range of these examples, this article examines Balthasar’s hope that all will be saved, finding that it is not a theological statement of belief in universal salvation but simply the hope that no soul is condemned to hell, with all being somehow saved even in ways we do not know. That this is a personal position of love for others rather than a statement of systematic theology means that Balthasar has been condemned unjustifiably by some.
