Apologetics Today in the Light of Scripture and the Second Vatican Council
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This article identifies a number of calls to apologetical activity in Scripture and the Second Vatican Council. Important features of being able to explain effectively one’s hope and faith include good preparation through education and formation as well as having a loving Christian manner when doing so, as highlighted in scriptural and conciliar sources; this is especially necessary in today’s postmodern context, where the need for apologetics to adapt to its context is as important as ever. Formation and apologetical preparation have been neglected to a significant extent in general since the Council, as shown by a recent survey on faithfulness to and knowledge of a central Church teaching, showing the need for apologetical formation, even though the Council documents state that responsibility is placed on all the faithful to be prepared for apologetical activity. The Council documents also place an obligation on the clergy, laity, schools, academics, and parents for children and adults to be prepared effectively in order to be able to explain their faith and hope in Christ. Importance is placed on apologetics as a method of Christian communication that should be used appropriately in its context, which should be supported by academics in the field of apologetics. The call from a senior cardinal for a “new apologetics” to be developed over a decade ago remains very important today.
